Assisted Living Move Checklist for Families
A good checklist helps your family stay organized without trying to remember every detail at once. Use this guide to think through planning, sorting, packing, move day, and settling in.
Before you start sorting
Confirm move date and room details when possible. Gather facility guidelines on furniture size, what is included, and any restrictions. Identify family decision-makers and how you will communicate.
Room-by-room sorting
Work through the current home by room. Use simple categories: keep for new space, give to family, donate, sell, store, or dispose. Photo important items when siblings cannot be there in person.
What to bring and what to leave
Prioritize comfort and familiarity: favorite chair, photos, bedding that feels like home, clothing for the season, toiletries, and any approved medical equipment. Leave behind items that will not fit or are not allowed.
Move day and settling in
Plan who will be present, how movers will be directed, and what should be set up first in the new room — bed made, bathroom stocked, photos placed, and a safety walkthrough.
